Stocks, bonds and other marketable securities are an easy way to support the causes important to you in a tax advantaged manner and at a lower out-of-pocket cost to you.
If you have securities that you have owned for more than one year and are worth more today than when originally purchased, you can donate them and avoid capital gains tax and receive an income tax savings based on the current fair market value. Your out-of-pocket cost is the original cost of the securities minus the tax savings.
You have preserved your cash and made a meaningful gift while reaping tax benefits.
Many donors use securities to make a larger gift than they could by using their cash.
