Meet Stephen Mackintosh

Stephen and Anne MackintoshIt happened extremely fast.

Bicycling home from work one day, Stephen Mackintosh took his eyes off the road for a just a moment and crashed into the back of a parked 18-wheeler. While still on the pavement, Stephen knew he was in trouble. He knew, too, that if he had any chance of surviving, help would need to arrive immediately. Thankfully, it did.

An ambulance rushed Stephen to Parkland Memorial Hospital where he was given an MRI scan to determine the extent of his injuries. Stephen couldn’t move his arms and legs. The MRI confirmed he had suffered extensive spinal cord injuries.

It’s been a little more than a year since Stephen’s accident. In hindsight, Stephen credits his quick and efficient treatment at Parkland with allowing him to recover as much as he has. Stephen says he’s seeing good progress in the movement of his arms and legs – and looks forward to many good times ahead.

“In a situation like this, speed is of the essence,” Stephen said. “There were no delays. They really took care of me and made me feel comfortable.” Stephen also was quickly connected with his wife, Anne, who has been by his side every step of the way.

“We were at Parkland only for a day or two, but I have distinct memories of several of the doctors and nurses Stephen saw there,” she said. “They were so caring and comforting, talking to me all the time and keeping me updated.”

Anne says Stephen is “the same old guy” – though a stronger version. He was back working part-time months ago, and is experimenting with sports for those with physical disabilities.

“His patience is pretty incredible,” Anne said. “When I married him, I knew he was upbeat, but he literally wakes up every day with a smile on his face and a great attitude, and that makes it so much easier.”
